Architectural features have always been a source of inspiration when it comes to interior design and home décor. Interpretations of columns, shields, arches, vines and other symbols found on ancient buildings can be used as decorative items in your rooms.
For example, the wall hook pictured features a fleur de lis symbol at the top. This is a French word (pronounced flur de lee) literally meaning lily flower. It has been a symbol of France for centuries, often seen in family crests, royal coats of arms or as ornamentation on buildings and fences. The artichoke is another symbol often found in ancient architecture. It is an odd looking vegetable but the shape and texture of the leaves can result in very interesting pottery, finials, or decorative items for the home. A painting or photo of an artichoke hanging in a contemporary kitchen will add a graphic pop of color. In a traditional home, displaying a set of rustic artichoke finials as bookends adds just the right touch of history to the room. It is not unusual to find large artichoke shaped finials flanking the front door of a traditional home. For some reason, their unusual shape is pleasant and welcoming.
