The Use of Classic Motifs in Home Decor

The Use of Classic Motifs in Home DecorArchitectural features have always been a source of inspiration when it comes to interior design and home décor. Interpretations of columns, shields, arches, vines and other symbols found on ancient buildings can be used as decorative items in your rooms.

For example, the wall hook pictured features a fleur de lis symbol at the top. This is a French word (pronounced flur de lee) literally meaning lily flower. It has been a symbol of France for centuries, often seen in family crests, royal coats of arms or as ornamentation on buildings and fences. Today the fleur de lis design can be found on fabric, sconces, pottery, lighting fixtures and artwork. It will definitely add a bit of French flavor to any home.

The artichoke is another symbol often found in ancient architecture. It is thought to be the symbol of hope and, for this reason, could be found throughout Louisiana after hurricane Katrina devastated the area a few years ago. It appears at the top of columns, on fence posts and carved into marble walls in ancient buildings. It is an odd looking vegetable but the shape and texture of the leaves can result in very interesting pottery, finials, or decorative items for the home. A painting or photo of an artichoke hanging in a contemporary kitchen will add a graphic pop of color. In a traditional home, displaying a set of rustic artichoke finials as bookends adds just the right touch of history to the room. It is not unusual to find large artichoke shaped finials flanking the front door of a traditional home. For some reason, their unusual shape is pleasant and welcoming.

The very definition of classic design means it has endured through the years and continues to be popular. Regardless of your design style, it can be fun to bring a touch of history to your home through the use of these classic motifs.

Five Good Reasons to Plan a MontanAscape

montanascape, montana scape travel and vacationsMontana is a state full of contradictions. You will find wide open plains as well as craggy snow covered mountain ranges. Home styles range from quaint farmhouses to magnificent log homes. You can hunt wild game or you can pamper yourself with a day at the spa. Whatever you choose to do in Montana, you will not be disappointed.

Outdoor Activities

Montana is a Mecca for those who enjoy outdoor activities. Year round activities include hunting wild game (seasonal), fishing in one of the many lakes, skiing at Big Sky or enjoying the uncrowded runs of a local mountain such as Whitefish near Glacier Park (seasonal), horseback riding or hiking and backpacking year round. Yellowstone National park is close enough to enjoy a day trip and is available to visitors year round. However, private vehicles are not allowed in the park during winter months so access is restricted to escorted tours.

Dining

Dining is truly an epicurean experience in Montana. Interesting dishes such as buffalo and bison burgers, locally caught trout and salmon, elk sausage and venison steak are available throughout the state. Downtown Bozeman is proud to be the home of Ted’s Montana Grill owned by Ted Turner. Located in the historic 1929 Baxter Hotel, everything in the restaurant from the recycled paper to the vegetables and meat used in the dishes comes from his local ranch.

Relaxation

While some vacations are meant for excitement and activity, sometimes all you want to do is escape from the hectic everyday noise of cell phones, computers, televisions and even other people. Montana offers many different spa experiences such as the Fairmont Hot Springs Spa with pools fed by natural hot springs or the historic turn of the century lodge at Chico Hot Springs Resort. Or you can simply relax in a lakeside or mountainside cabin and enjoy the peace and quiet.

Culture

Montana is often thought of as the cowboy state full of dude ranches and horses. While you will certainly find these, there is also a large Native American influence as well as many historic areas to visit. History buffs will enjoy visiting The Little Big Horn Battlefield National Monument located outside of Billings. This is the spot where Custer’s last stand took place. Art connoisseurs can visit the Charles W. Russell museum in Great Falls. Along with Remington, Charles Russell is famous for his paintings depicting life in the west. Cities like Bozeman, Billings, Helena and Missoula, along with many other Montana towns, feature galleries full of paintings and sculptures from up and coming local artists.

Housing

By many standards, housing is still affordable in Montana. It is possible to purchase a 4 bedroom, 2 bath home on a full acre for $200,000! Undeveloped land is also available if you are looking to build your dream home or vacation getaway. If money is no object the sky is the limit in Big Sky country. The Yellowstone Club, outside of Bozeman and located at the foot of Big Sky ski resort, offers just 865 private residences on over 13,000 acres. This development features a private ski lift with heated seats (the ultimate in luxury!), a golf course designed by Tom Weiskopf and all the privacy and security you could want.

Re-create the Movie Theater Experience in your own Home Media Room

home media roomMovies have the ability to touch all of our senses. We hear the conversations and the music, we see the beautiful scenery and the actors, we feel through our emotions as well as tactical elements such as the leather of the chairs and we certainly taste and smell via the yummy treats we allow ourselves to enjoy during a movie. Many lasting memories have been created because of movies. It could be a first date, a weekend ritual with friends or simply an opportunity to escape the real world for a couple of hours. Imagine being able to create those memories in the comfort of your own home.

Designing a home media room is made easier by the many furniture and electronic options available today.

Furniture

Comfort is important when it comes to watching a movie. There are many seating styles available that include oversized leather lounge chairs, modern chrome designs or upholstered styles that fit into any décor. Some styles even rock or recline and most include the necessary cup holder.

Sound

Having the proper acoustics and noise control in a home theatre is crucial. Today’s technology makes it possible to get the best sound possible through the use of acoustic panels that can also be decorative. You can personalize your space through the use of family photos or favorite artwork that has been stretched onto the mesh panels or you can choose from the many pre-designed image panels.

Electronics

Of course you cannot have a media center without electronics. The necessary items include a big screen television, a high resolution Blu Ray Player with a built-in Netflix driver for on demand movies and the ultimate Control 4 Universal Remote Control. For extra fun, consider a karaoke machine, DVD player and even special effects such as perimeter lighting or a “starry” sky that can all be controlled with one remote.

Whether you design your own media room or hire an experienced designer to help you with space planning or decorating, you are sure to create wonderful movie-watching memories with family and friends.

Control 4 | The Lifestyle Universal Remote Control

Control 4, lifestyle universal remote controlIt seems that everything these days is operated by a remote control. With the push of a button you can turn on your television, stereo or Jacuzzi, control the lighting, the garage door and even the outside sprinkler system. For this reason, the simplest item to use would be a Universal Remote Control.

A universal remote control is a device that can control or operate several different electrical appliances at the same time. It eliminates the need to have a separate remote for every piece of equipment. Can you imagine the stack of remotes necessary to operate everything in your home!

The Control 4 “Lifestyle” universal remote control has the capability of handling any and all electrical appliances in your home. Unlike other universal remote brands, there is no limit to the number of items you can place on the Control 4 remote. It is possible to program all your media needs onto one remote that would include your television(s), stereo equipment, other media components and satellite dish. At the same time you can control your home’s lighting, temperature and even your security alarm with this remote.

It will interface with most PC’s, excluding Apple. However, you are able to download an application from the Apple iPhone for free and integrate it with your home for a fee of roughly $300.00. This would then make it possible to access your Control 4 touch panel and control your entire home from your I Phone. Imagine being able to “tell” your home that you are arriving and to turn on interior and exterior lighting, heat the Jacuzzi, light a fire and have some soft tunes playing when you walk in the door.

Installing a Control 4 Universal Remote Control will provide you with additional security and peace of mind. You will no longer have to come home to a dark house or step out of the car to open the garage door. If you are away you will not have to worry about watering plants, turning on interior and exterior lights or wasting energy when the thermostat kicks in.

It is necessary to have this remote control installed and/or programmed by an electrician with experience in media and security systems. One word of caution—since this remote interfaces with your PC it is not 100% safe from hackers. Therefore, you will want to safeguard any personal information.

With the touch of a button you can reduce worry and stress about the security of your home, possibly reduce your utility bills by controlling the thermostat, enjoy a movie with your kids, and come home to a warm and welcoming fire and relaxing music. How divine!
